A Message from Our Foundation
From “Academic Background” to “Learning History”
We are often told that we are living in an era of reskilling. As life expectancy extends toward 100 years while the pace of change continues to accelerate, relying solely on where one studied during a brief period in early adulthood is no longer sufficient to navigate an entire lifetime.
In response to this need, opportunities for learning have expanded dramatically with the spread of the internet. Learning is now offered in a wide variety of forms—from structured programs such as academic degrees to microlearning that can be pursued alongside work. Learners are increasingly able to combine these opportunities in their own ways to build knowledge and skills that suit their individual goals.
However, skills acquired through such diverse and personalized learning pathways do not always have standardized names or clear recognition. This has created a growing need to clearly articulate—and make visible—each individual’s learning history.
We believe that Open Badges play a vital role in this context, serving as a form of “learning history” that is visible to both people and computers.
